What is meant by IP ratings?

thumb FT22 outside 90 group WetIP (also known as Ingress Protection) rating is an international standard (IEC 60529) that measures how effectively devices/products are protected from intrusion by foreign solid objects or liquids.

The IP Rating uses two numbers to determine a device/products ingress protection rating. Each number is rated on a scale of zero to eight. The first digit determines the protection rating against solids and the second digit determines the protection against liquids. Sometimes you will see a rating of "X" which means no rating.

Stainless steel - when and where to use

thumb Stainless Steel Sheet Plate Strip Coil Circle Stainless Steel is widely used on various products and applications........but what is stainless steel?  What makes it unique ?  and why is it more expensive than other carbon steels?

Stainless steel has been around for over 100 years, and is manufactured by adding small percentages of different alloy elements to create hundreds of differing types.  To differentiate each type they are assigned numbers which relate to these particular elements, the most common types generally quoted are 304 and 316. Lasnek manufacture products from both these grades, and as such this document will focus on both these types.

Arla Foods

In 2013 Arla Foods invested in a new super dairy based near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire England, said to be the world’s largest fresh milk processing site.  Having supplied installation contractors over many years with various containment systems within other Arla Foods production facilities, Lasnek were once again the contractors choice for the wire basket containment system within the CIP area.

Pepsi Bottling Group

Pepsi Bottling Group undertook an expansion of the bottling facility at Stone Mountain, Atlanta, Georgia, which involved the addition of several new lines and associated equipment.  Having worked closely with the Pepsi group for may years, Lasnek were the approved supplier for the stainless steel containment installed by the local installation contractor.  Lasnek provided the 4” ( 100mm )  wireway ( trunking ) used extensively throughout the facility.  Typically vertical drops would utilise the Lasnek solid base wireway with associated fittings and brackets.

Anheuser Busch

Anheuser Busch, now part of the Inbev Group, have multiple production facilities throughout North America including the Cartersville facility based in GA.   Increased capacity necessitated an additional bottling line including conveyors, cappers and filling equipment.  Lasnek were the chosen supplier to provide the stainless steel wireway ( trunking ) through a local contractor.  While installation was initially thought to be straight forward, the issue of how to route wireway around the top of the Krones Filler remained a stumbling block for the Project Manager.

Kingsway Road Tunnel

When the 1.5Km Kingsway Road Tunnel, which links the Wirral to Liverpool, required an upgrade to the extract fan and security systems, Lasnek were approached to tender for the stainless steel cable management system.  The tunnel provided a unique set of issues to overcome.  Firstly the tunnel cleaning process meant the containment has to be protected from water ingress.  Secondly the tunnel curved throughout the entire length.  Thirdly the access points and lighting where displaced by 8ft.  Lasnek positioned their KLT IP54 rated trunking system to meet all the requirements.

KLE Felixstowe Docks

Lasnek were commissioned by IES to manufacture and supply 18 large single door enclosures suitable for installation on 18 RTG’s ( Rubber Tyre Gantry)  situated on Felixstowe docks.  Each enclosure would be manufactured to Lasnek’s standard IP65 design, utilising 2mm satin stainless steel, 3 point locking system, entry box and gland plates.  Due to the location of the enclosure and its proximity to the North Sea, 316 grade stainless steel and components were used throughout.
